Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence has formally certified and approved the MAC OWL “Sova” armoured vehicle for service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, designating it the most highly protected locally produced Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected (MRAP) vehicle in its class. The approval, announced in early June 2026, follows a roughly 5-month development and testing arc that began with the vehicle’s public unveiling in January 2026. The MAC OWL “Sova” was developed through an 18-month engineering collaboration between Ukraine’s Military Armored Company (MAC) HUB and Paramount Industries Innovation Systems Greece (Paramount Greece).
MAC HUB Director Oleksandr Dubyna described the priorities: “We selected only the most reliable, combat-proven components, integrated the latest technologies, and spent countless hours refining every detail.” He added that at a time when troops are “sometimes forced to use civilian vehicles” in high-threat zones, “our vehicle is designed to save lives.”
On April 18, 2024, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, witnessed a demonstration of some vehicles, alongside other modernized military equipment. An Mbombe 6 amoured vehicle was seen in a video, and was reported to be a demonstration vehicle that was exported before the Russian invasion in February 2022. The vehicle was sent to Ukraine with all the necessary National Conventional Arms Control Committee (NCACC) permits from the South African government but could not return due to the conflict. Paramount said permit validity had been extended to next year as a result.
“SOVA” TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
The platform is built upon the monocoque hull architecture of Paramount’s Mbombe 4 Infantry Combat Vehicle, a design that originally passed NATO STANAG 4569 Level 4a/4b blast test and secured certification from South Africa’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in 2019. While leveraging this established 4×4 baseline, MAC HUB officials stated that the OWL is a standalone vehicle with major structural modifications tailored to the Ukrainian theatre, rather than a direct copy. The hull uses a flat V-shape blast-deflecting design and a fully welded armoured capsule designed to mitigate the effects of landmines, heavy artillery fragmentation, and improvised explosive devices.

The structural modifications include 16 mm side armour plates, making it the thickest ballistic shield in its vehicle category, compared to both domestic and foreign counterparts. The vehicle is certified to withstand detonations of up to 10 kg TNT equivalent beneath the wheels and hull positions alongside a 50 kg side-blast test, satisfying high-tier blast metrics for wheeled systems. The vehicle’s architecture accommodates up to 10 integrated electronic warfare modules, establishing a localized radio-frequency jamming dome over the vehicle.
Mobility figures position the OWL as a practical frontline vehicle. It weighs between 14.2 and 15 tonnes depending on configuration, carries a crew of 2 plus 6 to 8 troops, and is powered by a Cummins 8.9-litre turbodiesel producing 450 horsepower, the most powerful engine fitted to any Ukrainian special armoured vehicle, according to Defence Express. A 45 cm ground clearance, hydropneumatic independent suspension, and 800 km range round out the platform’s operational utility across Ukraine’s varied terrain. Maximum speed is 100 km/h. A rear-folding ramp with servo drive allows rapid troop deployment. Inside the hull, the vehicle utilizes energy-attenuating shock-absorbing seating systems to protect the crew from spinal injuries during high-velocity blast accelerations.
DECENTRALIZED DEFENCE PRODUCTION
The industrial model matters as much as the vehicle itself. Paramount has built its export strategy around what it calls “portable production”, transferring manufacturing intellectual property and advanced technical assemblies to partner countries rather than supplying finished vehicles. This means MAC HUB holds local production sovereignty for high-survivability assets, allowing output to scale without depending on foreign supply chains during an active conflict. Militarnyi has reported that Ukraine could acquire up to 100 vehicles per year. This portable production model mirrors a successful 2021 model in India, where Paramount partnered with Bharat Forge Limited to build the Mbombe 4 locally under the Kalyani M4 designation.
The codification secures the immediate deployment pipeline for the OWL within frontline transport and reconnaissance units. With more than 150 legacy Mbombe 4 platforms already built or ordered globally across 5 countries as of early 2022, the certification of this Ukrainian variant indicates a shift toward specialized, regional modifications built under licensed partnerships.
The Eurosatory 2026 defence exhibition in Paris, where the OWL was reportedly displayed to an international audience, may accelerate interest from other European operators. Ukraine now has a domestically produced MRAP platform formally recognized as meeting the highest protection standard available, built inside its own borders, and engineered around the threats its crews face every day.
