South Africa’s SVI Engineering Reveals New Six-Wheeled Tactical Vehicle

The MAX Recon is a militarized, heavily armoured derivative of the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series, designed for reconnaissance, fire support, and rapid-response operations.


South African vehicle manufacturer SVI Engineering has officially unveiled the MAX Recon, a six-wheeled tactical vehicle built on the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series platform. The vehicle is a purpose-built military derivative of the company’s existing MAX 3, expanding on the earlier design with a third axle, heavier armour, and a modular weapon-mounting system intended to serve a range of battlefield roles.

A Three-Axle Upgrade

The standard Land Cruiser 70 is a two-axle, four-wheel-drive platform with a long track record in civilian and light military use across Africa and the Middle East. SVI’s conversion extends the vehicle to three axles, pushing its gross vehicle mass to 6,000 kg — a meaningful increase that makes it practical to carry weapon systems, communications equipment, and other military payloads that would overload the base configuration.

The driver can select between three power-distribution modes — 6×2, 6×4, or full 6×6 engagement — depending on terrain and load requirements. A bogie suspension system is fitted at the rear axles, and SVI replaced the standard rear differentials with heavy-duty units using locally manufactured casings while keeping Toyota’s internal components. That combination is a deliberate maintenance choice: retaining Toyota parts means the vehicle can be serviced using the same supply chains already in place for Land Cruisers wherever they are operated.

The powertrain is shared with the MAX 3 — a 4.5-litre V8 turbodiesel — and SVI rates the MAX Recon at a top speed of 120 km/h, with a burst speed of 140 km/h.

Equipped with B6 armour (including for the engine bay and firewall as well as for the roof), the MAX Recon comes with a split windscreen featuring B6 glass. Each section of the windscreen can be folded flat when required, while the co-driver’s dedicated weapon mount allows for direct forward firing, maximising frontal combat capability.
A turret-mounting interface is integrated into the roof, while each door aperture features a weapon mount and a composite half-door (complete with quick-release hinges for rapid removal). The vehicle can be closed with a canvas cover for lighter missions or fitted with full armoured doors for higher protection levels.

Armour and Protection

The MAX Recon is fitted with Level B6 armour throughout, which provides protection against rifle rounds up to 7.62×51 mm — including fire from AK-47, R1, and R5 weapons. Coverage extends to the engine bay, firewall, and roof. The roof armour is intended specifically to address the growing threat of drone-dropped munitions, an increasingly common feature of contemporary conflicts.

The windscreen is split into two independent sections of B6-grade ballistic glass, each of which can be folded flat — useful for direct-fire situations or to reduce heat and dust during patrols. The co-driver’s position includes a dedicated forward-facing weapon mount.

The doors are designed with flexibility in mind. A composite half-door with quick-release hinges can be removed rapidly when the crew needs greater situational awareness or ease of exit. When higher protection is required, full armoured doors can be fitted in their place. A canvas cover is also available for lower-threat missions.

Modular Weapon Configurations

SVI designed the MAX Recon to accept a range of weapon installations without requiring significant structural modification. Current configurations include:

  • Reconnaissance platform — baseline configuration for intelligence-gathering operations
  • ZU-23 autocannon — a 23 mm twin-barrelled anti-aircraft and ground-fire system, developed in collaboration with South Africa’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)
  • 14.5 mm anti-aircraft system
  • Scorpion automated mortar systems — available in 60 mm and 81 mm variants
  • 107 mm rocket system
  • Drone operations base — for launching, controlling, or recovering unmanned aerial systems

The roof includes an integrated turret-mounting interface, and each door aperture features a weapon mount. SVI says mission-specific reconfigurations can be carried out using basic hand tools and lifting equipment, allowing crews to adapt the vehicle without specialized facilities or lengthy downtime.

The vehicle also supports electronic systems including secure communications, command-and-control equipment, electronic jamming, and electronic warfare suites. SVI has indicated future variants will include a 120 mm mortar system and enhanced anti-drone capabilities.

A Growing Customer Base

The six-wheeled MAX 3 — the direct predecessor of the MAX Recon — was first publicly shown at the Africa Aerospace and Defence exhibition in Pretoria in September 2022. In early 2024, the South African National Defence Force took delivery of two four-wheel-drive and four six-wheeled MAX 3 units, fitted with armoured cargo cabins. The vehicles have since appeared at the South African Army’s Vukuhlome exercises in the Northern Cape.

In 2023, an unnamed African nation placed the first export order for the 6×6 MAX 3 in a non-military cargo-carrying role, with production carried out at SVI’s facility east of Pretoria.

The MAX Recon’s debut also comes against the backdrop of a formal South African procurement effort. Armscor, the country’s defence acquisition agency, issued a tender in 2024 — identified as EWSD/2024/18 — for a modified 6×6 vehicle built on the Toyota Land Cruiser single-cab platform, specifically for South African Special Forces use. The specification calls for automatic transmission, a front bull bar, and a rear flatbed load carrier rated at 3.5 tonnes. SVI and fellow South African firm Armormax Defence, with its TAC-6 vehicle, are considered likely contenders for the contract.
