The Malian Armed Forces integrated a new shipment of Chinese-made Yitian-L short-range air defence systems (SHORAD) and armoured vehicles into its inventory following a series of deliveries in early 2026. This hardware, primarily manufactured by NORINCO (China North Industries Corporation), arrived through neighbouring Guinea to bolster the transitional government’s capacity to secure territory against insurgent groups.
The arrival of the Yitian-L systems follows a defence contract signed between the Malian junta and NORINCO in September, 2024. Observers first identified the mobile air defence units in convoy footage moving through Mali in late 2025 and early 2026. The most recent batch of equipment, verified by regional tracking on March 12, 2026, includes both the Yitian-L systems and several variants of the VN22 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV). These systems were prominently featured in local military movements following the 65th anniversary of Malian independence celebrations in late 2025.
The Yitian-L serves as a lightweight, mobile surface-to-air missile system designed to protect maneuver units or stationary infrastructure from low-altitude threats. It is mounted on a Dongfeng Mengshi 4×4 tactical vehicle, a platform with mobility characteristics similar to the American Humvee. Each unit carries four TY-90 infrared-guided missiles, which are specifically optimized to engage helicopters, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS AND PLATFORM ROLES
The system utilizes a foldable 3D X-band radar capable of detecting fighter-sized aircraft at a distance of 18 km. For engagement, the TY-90 missiles provide a hit range between 500 meters and 6 km, with an effective intercept altitude from 15 meters up to 4 km. To maintain a low electronic signature, the system also features a passive sensor suite including thermal imaging and a laser rangefinder. These tools allow the two-man or three-man crew to track and fire upon targets without activating the radar, which helps the vehicle avoid detection by enemy electronic warfare assets.
Alongside the air defense units, Mali has received a diverse fleet of armored platforms to replace aging Soviet-era stocks. This includes the VN22 6×6 IFV and the VN22B fire-support variant. While the standard VN22 serves as an armored personnel carrier with a 14.5 mm heavy machine gun, the VN22B variant carries a 105 mm rifled gun in a remote turret. This provides the Malian army with a mobile direct-fire capability against fortified positions or light armor without the logistical weight of a main battle tank.
Mali’s procurement also emphasizes protection against asymmetric threats like improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The country has taken delivery of approximately 36 Norinco CS/VP14 Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles as of August 2025, with reports indicating a total order of up to 160 units. These join the VP11 4×4 lightweight MRAPs and VN2C 6×6 carriers already in service. The CS/VP14 is specifically designed to protect occupants from heavy under-vehicle blasts, a frequent cause of casualties in the Sahel region.
By mounting these systems on the Dongfeng Mengshi chassis, the Malian military maintains high off-road mobility, allowing air defence umbrellas to move at the same pace as rapid-intervention convoys. This influx of Chinese hardware marks a pivot in Mali’s defence procurement strategy away from traditional Western partners and toward a mix of Chinese and Russian suppliers. While Russia continues to supply heavy armor and aircraft, China has become the primary source for modern, wheeled tactical vehicles and short-range electronics. This dual-sourcing strategy allows the Malian transitional government to rapidly expand its motorization and air defence capabilities as it seeks to regain control of the northern and central regions.
The rapid integration of the VN22 and Yitian-L platforms will likely require a sustained presence of NORINCO technical staff to train Malian operators and maintain the complex electronics. As the final batches of the CS/VP14 MRAPs arrive throughout 2026, the Malian Armed Forces will have one of the most modernized wheeled armored fleets in West Africa. Future operations will likely see these units deployed in combined-arms groups to test their effectiveness in the high-heat, high-dust environments of the Sahel.
