The Malawi Air Force (MAF) is currently revitalizing its rotary-wing capacity through a technical partnership with Airbus Helicopters. This project focuses on the restoration of two AS350 Écureuil, or Squirrel, helicopters to full operational status. These light multi-role aircraft are essential for the MAF as it manages domestic security, disaster relief, and border surveillance across the varied terrain of the Great Rift Valley. The agreement for this technical support was finalized before the government reshuffle in October 2025, ensuring that defense modernization remains a priority despite shifts in leadership.
The Écureuil family, now largely transitioned to the H125 designation in the Airbus catalogue, is a staple of African air wings due to its performance in “hot and high” environments. This is a critical factor for Malawi, where high temperatures and mountainous regions can severely degrade aircraft lift capacity. The AS350 B3 variant, commonly used for such missions, typically utilizes a Turbomeca Arriel 2B1 or 2D turboshaft engine. This power plant provides approximately 847 to 952 shaft horsepower, allowing the aircraft to maintain high performance levels even at increased density altitudes.
Restoring these two airframes to operational condition involves a comprehensive inspection and replacement of life-limited components. This process often includes checking the integrity of the Starflex rotor head and the composite main rotor blades, which are known for their durability and low vibration. By bringing these aircraft back into service, the MAF regains a versatile platform capable of a 2,250-kilogram maximum takeoff weight. The aircraft serves as a force multiplier for a relatively small air force, filling roles that range from troop transport to medical evacuation.
Technical sustainability is a core component of the current agreement. Alongside the airframe restoration, Airbus Helicopters has organized two specialized maintenance training courses. These sessions provide Malawian technicians with the specific skills required to perform scheduled inspections and line maintenance locally. This transition toward self-sufficiency is a notable move for the MAF, as it reduces long-term operational costs and minimizes the downtime associated with sending components abroad for repair. Effective local maintenance is particularly vital for the MAF given its limited fleet size, where the availability of every single airframe directly impacts national response capabilities.
The MAF fleet has historically operated a mix of European and South African aviation assets, including larger SA330 Puma transport helicopters and C-212 fixed-wing aircraft. The light Écureuil platforms complement these larger assets by providing a more cost-effective solution for routine patrols and scout missions. The integration of modern avionics during such restoration projects often includes the installation of glass cockpit displays, such as the Garmin G500H, which improves situational awareness for pilots operating in challenging weather or at night.
Strategic consistency in Malawian defense policy is evident in the timing of this contract. Because the agreement was reached prior to the reshuffle in October 2025, the program provides a stable foundation for the new military leadership to build upon. This continuity demonstrates a commitment to maintaining a credible aerial deterrent and search and rescue capability. The restoration of these helicopters ensures that the MAF can continue to support civil authorities during the frequent flooding and weather-related emergencies that affect the region.
The partnership with Airbus demonstrates the increasing reliance on manufacturer-led sustainment programs to extend the life of ageing fleets. Rather than pursuing expensive new acquisitions, the MAF is optimising its existing inventory. This approach balances budget constraints with the immediate need for reliable hardware. As the two aircraft return to the flight line, the emphasis will shift toward the long-term effectiveness of the newly trained maintenance teams in keeping these versatile helicopters mission-ready.
Following a period of fleet attrition and ageing, the current inventory centres on the Xian MA600, while the remaining Dornier 228 assets provide a secondary, albeit ageing, utility layer.
The backbone of the MAF transport wing currently consists of two Xian MA600 aircraft, which arrived in July 2022. These Chinese-manufactured turboprops represent a notable technological leap over the legacy systems they replaced. The MA600 is an improved iteration of the MA60 and utilises two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127J turboshaft engines, each producing approximately 2,750 shaft horsepower. These engines drive four-bladed Hamilton Sundstrand propellers, providing the aircraft with a cruise speed of approximately 430 kilometres per hour. With a maximum takeoff weight of 21,800 kilograms and a capacity for up to 56 passengers, the MA600 offers the MAF a robust regional transport capability that is well-suited for moving personnel and light cargo between Lilongwe and regional hubs.
The induction of the MA600 was prompted by the need to phase out older airframes that had become increasingly difficult to maintain. Historically, the MAF operated the CASA C-212 Aviocar, a Spanish-built STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) aircraft. While the C-212 served as a reliable workhorse for decades, it is no longer listed in active service directories for 2026; its role has been effectively subsumed by the more modern Chinese platforms. Similarly, older Dornier Do 27 and Do 28 models have been retired as part of a broader effort to simplify the logistics chain.
The utility segment remains anchored by the Dornier 228-202K, although this fleet was reduced following a fatal crash in June 2024. The incident, which occurred in the Chikangawa Forest, claimed the life of the Vice President and nine others, leaving the MAF with a single operational Dornier 228 (registration MAAW-T04). The Dornier 228 utilises Garrett TPE331-5 turboprop engines and is valued for its ability to operate from the short, unpaved airstrips common in Malawi’s remote districts. However, the age of these airframes, which were delivered in the late 1980s, presents ongoing sustainment challenges.
To address these readiness issues, the MAF has increased its engagement with the United States through the State Partnership Program (SPP). In January 2026, personnel from the North Carolina Air National Guard conducted a high-level visit to Malawi to share best practices in aviation logistics and maintenance. This collaboration demonstrates the MAF’s intent to modernise its ground support operations alongside its flight hardware. The focus of this partnership includes standardising maintenance schedules and improving the supply chain for critical components, which is essential for maintaining the high tempo required for disaster relief and domestic security missions.
The 2025-2026 period also marks a shift in how Malawi manages its air assets within the broader context of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM). By aligning its military logistical capabilities with regional air transport standards, the MAF demonstrates a commitment to integrated aerial operations. The restoration of the rotary-wing fleet and the modernization of the fixed-wing transport wing ensure that Malawi can maintain a credible response capability in a region prone to environmental and security volatility.
