Paramount Group, the Midrand-based defence and aerospace manufacturer, has positioned itself as a notable player in this evolving market. By leveraging its international footprint, specifically through Paramount Greece, the company is bypassing the traditional limitations of South African procurement channels to supply the Ukrainian Armed Forces with advanced armoured platforms. This move reflects a broader trend of African-developed intellectual property finding a critical role in high-intensity European warfare.
The centrepiece of this expansion is the OWL armoured vehicle, a platform specifically adapted for the unique requirements of the Ukrainian front. Developed over an 18-month engineering cycle, the OWL represents a collaborative effort between Paramount Greece and the Ukrainian Firm Military Armored Company HUB (MAC HUB). The vehicle is the second and largest entry in the current collaborative lineup. It distinguishes itself through a design philosophy that prioritises survivability against the pervasive threats of landmines and artillery fragments.
Technically, the OWL utilises a fully welded monocoque chassis. In armoured vehicle engineering, a monocoque structure integrates the chassis and the body into a single, load-bearing shell. This differs from traditional body-on-frame designs, where a protective hull is bolted onto a separate chassis. The primary advantage of the monocoque approach in a combat environment is its superior resistance to blast. By eliminating the structural weak points inherent in bolted frames, the hull can more effectively dissipate the kinetic energy from an under-vehicle explosion, such as an anti-tank mine.
Oleksandr Dubyna, the director of MAC HUB, has noted that this specific feature provides the vehicle with some of the highest levels of mine protection currently available in the Ukrainian theatre. Although the vehicle resembles Paramount’s Mbombe 4, MAC HUB stated that it is not an adapted copy, but a standalone vehicle developed from a proven platform with major structural modifications that make it well-suited to local conditions.
The development of the OWL incorporates direct battlefield feedback from Ukrainian personnel. Beyond mine resistance, the engineering team focused on hardening the platform against small-arms fire and the shrapnel generated by frequent artillery exchanges. Integration and final customisation take place locally in Ukraine through MAC HUB, ensuring that the vehicles meet the immediate operational needs of the troops. This partnership demonstrates a modular approach to defence manufacturing where South African design expertise is married to Ukrainian industrial capacity and Greek regulatory access.
This globalised production model is already a hallmark of Paramount’s operations. The OWL platform shares heritage with the Kalyani M4, a vehicle produced under licence in India by Bharat Forge. This cross-continental lineage showcases how a single design can be adapted and manufactured across different jurisdictions to satisfy diverse geopolitical requirements. For Paramount, using Paramount Industries Greece S.A. is a strategic necessity. Operating through a European and NATO-linked subsidiary allows the firm to engage more directly with Ukrainian procurement agencies while South Africa maintains a formal policy of diplomatic non-alignment.
In addition to the OWL, Paramount has introduced the Mbombe family of vehicles to the Ukrainian military leadership. In April 2024, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, attended a demonstration of the Mbombe 6, a 6×6 infantry combat vehicle. The Mbombe 6 is designed for high-threat environments, offering a low profile to reduce the vehicle’s visual signature on the battlefield. It features a mine-protected flat-floor design, which is a departure from the traditional V-shaped hulls used in many Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles. The flat-floor technology preserves a lower centre of gravity and improves stability without sacrificing the ability to withstand substantial blast yields, typically rated to STANAG 4569 Level 4 standards.
The Mbombe 4, the 4×4 variant of the family, has also been presented to Ukrainian stakeholders. This platform is optimised for rapid intervention and can be equipped with various weapon systems, including remotely controlled weapon stations. The versatility of the Mbombe series allows it to fill multiple roles, from traditional troop transport to a platform for anti-tank guided missiles. Ukraine’s interest in these vehicles is part of a wider effort to replace ageing Soviet-era equipment with modern platforms that offer higher survival rates for crews.
The involvement of South African technology in Ukraine is not an isolated event but part of a wider trend involving diverse international actors. For example, Morocco became the first African nation to provide direct military support to Kyiv by facilitating the transfer of T-72 tanks and spare parts. While the South African government continues to call for a negotiated settlement and maintains its ties with Moscow, the private defence sector is actively participating in the modernisation of the Ukrainian arsenal. This creates a complex dynamic where commercial interests and national foreign policy operate on different tracks.
Paramount Group’s aggressive pursuit of international contracts comes at a time of corporate restructuring. In 2024, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States. This legal move followed a prolonged dispute and involved listing assets between $500 million and $1 billion against liabilities ranging from $100 million to $500 million. Despite these financial complexities, the company has maintained its operational tempo. The restructuring appears to be a tool for streamlining global operations rather than a sign of reduced capacity, as evidenced by the successful launch of mass production for other platforms, such as the VOLS military buggies by associated Ukrainian partners.
The new MAC Owol (Sova) has been extensively localised and re-engineered by MAC HUB engineers to meet Ukrainian operational realities, terrain, and threat profiles. This localisation has been achieved through Paramount’s portable production model, which enables advanced defence systems to be manufactured in-country, ensuring sovereignty, security of supply, and rapid scalability, the company added.
“For Paramount Greece, the partnership marks the company’s formal entry into the European defence market, reinforcing its role as a catalyst for regional industrial capability, innovation, and collaboration,” the company stated.
A spokesperson for Paramount Greece said: “By combining Paramount Greece’s advanced platform design and industrial expertise with MAC HUB’s frontline experience and in-country manufacturing capability, the partnership delivers a model for future European-Ukrainian defence cooperation. It ensures that critical systems can be produced, maintained, and evolved locally, reducing dependency on external supply chains while accelerating operational availability.”
A spokesperson for MAC HUB stated: “This partnership is about far more than a single vehicle. It is about building resilient defence ecosystems, transferring advanced capability, and ensuring that nations facing the most demanding security challenges have the tools, technologies, and industrial capacity required to defend themselves – today and in the future.”
The MAC Owl is undergoing operational testing with the Ukrainian Army following its public reveal on 16 January. “MAC Owl is expected to enter extended combat trials as early as this month, during which its strengths and potential shortcomings will become apparent. This will serve as a prerequisite for the vehicle’s adoption into service and the launch of serial production,” Militarnyi reported, adding that Ukraine could acquire up to 100 vehicles a year.
MAC (Military Armoured Company) HUB manufactures the Katran unmanned surface vessel, optronic systems, unmanned ground vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and armoured vehicles such as the MAC-TI (UkrArmoTech UAT-T Cobra) and MAC-FI (INKAS Hornet). Both vehicles are based on the Land Cruiser 79 chassis.
The expansion into Ukraine represents a strategic pivot for Paramount. By establishing a firm foothold in a high-intensity conflict zone, the company is not only securing a share of a growing market but also gaining invaluable data on how its vehicles perform against modern electronic warfare, suicide drones, and massed artillery. These lessons will likely inform the next generation of armoured vehicle design, ensuring that the South African-born technology remains relevant in the face of 21st-century threats.
