Ghana deploys Indigenous AeriusPro VTOL drones for Northern Border security

The Ghana Armed Forces, or GAF, recently reached a notable milestone in their modernization efforts with the operational deployment of the AeriusPro unmanned aerial vehicle, known as a UAV. This indigenous platform is currently active in the Bawku and Binduri regions, where security challenges require persistent aerial surveillance. The 93 Signal Regiment of the Ghanaian Army manages the technical operations of the system, working in coordination with the Army Special Brigade and the Northern Command. This deployment marks a shift toward domestic engineering to address internal security and border protection requirements.

The AeriusPro is a fixed-wing Vertical Take-Off and Landing, or VTOL, platform. This design combines the launch flexibility of a multi-rotor drone with the aerodynamic efficiency of a traditional fixed-wing aircraft. Because it does not require a prepared runway or bulky catapult launch systems, the AeriusPro is particularly suited for the rugged terrain of northern Ghana. Once the aircraft reaches a safe altitude via its vertical lift motors, it transitions to forward flight using a horizontal propeller. This configuration allows for longer endurance and higher cruise speeds compared to standard quadcopters, providing commanders with a persistent eye in the sky over critical infrastructure.

A primary feature of the AeriusPro is its full integration with the Sigtrack situational awareness platform. In modern defence operations, a drone is only as effective as the data it transmits. Sigtrack functions as a Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance, or C4ISR, suite. This software aggregates real-time video feeds and telemetry from the AeriusPro, overlaying the data onto digital maps for use by the 93 Signal Regiment.

This integration allows for seamless intelligence sharing between the field operators and the Northern Command headquarters. By providing a common operating picture, or COP, the system reduces the time required for decision-making during fast-moving security incidents. For the Army Special Brigade, this means the ability to track movement across borders or monitor sensitive mining assets with high precision. The software ensures that thermal imagery and high-definition video reach the relevant commanders, enabling them to identify threats before they escalate into active engagements.

The deployment in the Bawku and Binduri regions is a direct response to the complex security environment in northern Ghana. These areas have faced recurring communal tensions and are increasingly vulnerable to spillover from extremist activities in the neighbouring Sahel region. The GAF utilises the AeriusPro to maintain overwatch on critical routes and porous border crossings where traditional ground patrols might be limited by terrain or risk of ambush.

Beyond border security, the AeriusPro monitors mining assets. Illegal mining operations often occur in remote locations, making them difficult to track via ground-based vehicles. The persistent surveillance capabilities of the drone allow the military to map these sites and coordinate with civilian authorities for enforcement. By using an indigenous platform, the GAF ensures that the operational data remains within national encrypted networks, reducing the risk of foreign intercept or cyber-interference.

Comparing Ghana’s Unmanned Fleet

While the AeriusPro represents a substantial leap in local manufacturing, the Ghanaian military operates a diverse fleet of international systems. This mixed-fleet strategy allows the GAF to utilise different platforms based on specific mission requirements. The current inventory includes the Chinese-made ZMO-120, another fixed-wing VTOL platform. The ZMO-120 offers a similar flight profile to the AeriusPro but serves as a baseline for comparing the performance and reliability of the homegrown system.

The military also employs the DeltaQuad Pro, a Dutch-engineered VTOL drone known for its ease of use and long-range telemetry. Additionally, the GAF utilises the FIXAR 007, a Latvian-developed UAV. The FIXAR 007 is unique because it lacks tilting rotors or separate lift motors; instead, it uses a fixed-angle motor configuration to achieve VTOL and forward flight. This design simplifies the mechanical structure of the drone, which can lead to lower maintenance requirements in dusty or harsh environments.

The introduction of the AeriusPro alongside these established international brands demonstrates that Ghanaian engineering is reaching competitive standards. Domestic production offers a substantial advantage regarding sustainability. When a foreign-made drone requires repairs, the military often faces long lead times for parts and specialised technical support. With the AeriusPro, the 93 Signal Regiment can work directly with local engineers to maintain the fleet, ensuring higher operational availability during peace-support missions.

Engineering Trade-offs in VTOL Design

The choice of a fixed-wing VTOL architecture involves specific technical trade-offs that engineers must manage. Fixed-wing drones offer better lift-to-drag ratios, allowing them to cover larger areas on a single battery charge or fuel tank. However, adding the hardware necessary for vertical takeoff increases the overall weight of the aircraft. This “dead weight” can reduce the available payload for cameras or sensors during the cruise phase of the mission.

The AeriusPro engineers appear to have balanced these factors to prioritise mission-ready efficiency. By optimising the airframe for the specific atmospheric conditions of West Africa, such as high heat and humidity, the developers have created a platform that may outperform generic international models in local theatres. The ability to launch from small clearings in the forest or from the back of a tactical vehicle gives the Northern Command a flexible response capability that traditional fixed-wing drones cannot match.

Strategic Impact of Indigenous Technology

The move toward homegrown unmanned technology contributes directly to national impact and defence autonomy. In the current global climate, reliance on external suppliers for critical intelligence assets can be a strategic vulnerability. By developing and deploying the AeriusPro, Ghana demonstrates its capacity to drive innovation within its own borders. This effort supports national peace-support initiatives by providing a reliable, locally supported tool for situational awareness.

The Army Special Brigade Commander and the Northern Command now possess a tool that is specifically tailored to the Ghanaian operational doctrine. This localised approach ensures that the training programs for the 93 Signal Regiment are closely aligned with the technical specifications of the platform. As the AeriusPro continues its mission in Bawku and Binduri, the data gathered will likely inform future iterations of the aircraft, leading to a cycle of continuous improvement in Ghana’s aerospace sector.

This deployment shows that local engineering can provide sophisticated solutions for complex modern threats. The integration of the AeriusPro into the wider GAF structure illustrates a clear path forward for other African nations seeking to modernise their defence forces through self-reliance. As the platform proves its worth in active service, it may serve as a blueprint for further indigenous projects in electronic warfare, communication systems, and advanced sensors.
