The Nigerian Air Force confirms that its C-130 aircraft (NAF 913) arrived safely at the maintainance facility, OGMA in Lisbon, Portugal today 26 December 2025.

The Nigerian Air Force C-130H Hercules transport aircraft, registered NAF 913, arrived safely at OGMA’s maintenance facility in Alverca do Ribatejo near Lisbon, Portugal, on December 26, 2025. Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, confirmed the ferry flight completed without incident after stops in Banjul, Gambia, and Casablanca, Morocco. Crew members remained safe and in good spirits throughout. This movement followed resolution of an earlier emergency landing in Burkina Faso. The arrival initiates scheduled periodic depot maintenance to restore full operational status.

The incident began on December 8, 2025, when NAF 913 diverted to Bobo-Dioulasso airport in Burkina Faso due to a technical fault en route to Portugal. Burkinabe authorities detained the aircraft and 11 personnel, citing unauthorised airspace entry. Nigeria described the landing as precautionary, in accordance with international aviation protocols. Diplomatic efforts, including a delegation led by Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar, meeting with President Ibrahim Traoré, secured the release after about 10 days. The event briefly strained relations amid regional tensions but ended amicably.

NAF 913 belongs to the Nigerian Air Force’s fleet of Lockheed Martin C-130H Hercules medium tactical transports, acquired in batches from the 1970s to 1980s. The aircraft features four Allison T56-A-15 turboprop engines producing 4,910 shaft horsepower each, enabling 335-knot cruise speeds, 2,360-nautical-mile ferry ranges, and 20-ton payloads. It supports troop transport, cargo airdrop, medical evacuation, and humanitarian missions across Nigeria’s vast terrain. The H-model’s rear-loading ramp and high-wing design allow short-field operations, though ageing airframes demand extensive inspections for structural fatigue and corrosion in humid climates.

Periodic depot maintenance involves deep-level overhauls, including wing box inspections, engine teardowns, and avionics upgrades, often every 10-15 years or 10,000 flight hours. OGMA, a Portuguese state-owned firm with Indústria de Aeronáutica de Portugal heritage, specialises in C-130 work, holding EASA and FAA certifications for structural repairs and modifications. Nigerian forces previously used in-country facilities like 631 Aircraft Maintenance Depot in Ikeja for reactivations, including NAF 913’s life extension in 2018 and NAF 918’s in 2023 with Pakistani assistance. Overseas PDM addresses complex tasks beyond local capacity, trading cost for specialised expertise.

This maintenance aligns with Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar’s drive for 90% fleet serviceability by Q4 2025. Announced at the July 2025 Aircraft Engineering Conference in Abuja, the target builds on a 72% rate achieved through predictive maintenance adoption in 2024, spare investments, and a new Directorate of Aircraft Life Cycle Management for cradle-to-grave oversight. The fleet has grown with 15 inductions since 2023, including T-129 helicopters and Diamond DA-62 surveillance aircraft, with 49 more expected by 2026. C-130s form the mobility backbone, ferrying troops and supplies for counterinsurgency in the northeast and northwest.

Past efforts highlight progress. In 2018, NAF engineers completed an in-house life extension on NAF 913, extending service life amid limited budgets. Reactivations of NAF 917 in 2019 and NAF 918 in 2023 reduced grounded platforms. Yet challenges persist: sanctions on some suppliers delay parts, and high operational tempo accelerates wear. Overseas PDM ensures compliance with Lockheed standards, avoiding risks from improvised fixes.

Meanwhile, interest in replacements emerges. China promoted its Y-20E heavy transport, dubbed “Chubby Girl,” to Nigeria’s Defence Minister in November 2023, offering 50-ton payloads and 7,800-kilometre ranges for strategic lift. Brazil’s Embraer demonstrated the KC-390 Millennium in 2024, a jet-powered medium transport with 26-ton capacity, 35-knot higher speeds than C-130s, and aerial refuelling capability. The KC-390 trades turboprop ruggedness for efficiency in contested airspace but demands paved runways. Nigeria evaluates these amid fleet diversification, balancing cost with performance for African Union peacekeeping commitments.
