Yet, the unmanned aerial vehicles drew particular attention, signalling the LNA’s adaptation to asymmetric threats in a protracted civil conflict. Two standout models, the VF-200 and Altair-370, underscored a shift toward affordable, terrain-agnostic platforms that enable persistent monitoring over Libya’s vast deserts and coastal zones, where manned flights carry high risks from rival factions.
The VF-200, towed into the parade on a Russian Ural-4320 truck trailer, represents a robust addition to the LNA’s reconnaissance toolkit. Manufactured by a mid-tier facility in southern China’s Guangdong province, this twin-boom design combines fixed wings for efficient forward flight with four rotor assemblies for vertical operations, allowing launches from unprepared sites without runways. Weighing 80 kilograms empty and reaching a maximum takeoff weight of 200 kilograms, it hauls payloads up to 60 kilograms, including electro-optical cameras, synthetic aperture radars, or signals intelligence pods for real-time target tracking. Its endurance stretches to four hours under a 50-kilogram load, covering 600 kilometres at speeds topping 150 kilometres per hour, powered by a hybrid electric propulsion system that balances battery efficiency with gasoline generators for extended loiter times. Operators interface via ground control stations with encrypted links, enabling autonomous waypoint navigation or manual overrides in cluttered airspace. The model’s versatility shines in Libya’s operational demands, where it can perch on rooftops in Benghazi suburbs or deploy from forward operating bases near oil fields, feeding data to command centres for artillery adjustments or troop movements.

Intriguingly, the VF-200’s presence hints at layered procurement networks. A darker variant appeared at Belarus’s MILEX 2025 arms exposition in Minsk earlier that year, produced under license by UAVHELI, a Minsk-based firm with ties to Russian defence circles. Minsk’s enduring alignment with Beijing, through joint ventures in electronics and aviation, raises questions about whether LNA intermediaries routed acquisitions via Eastern Europe to skirt Western sanctions or leverage cost advantages in re-export pricing. Such indirect sourcing mirrors broader patterns in non-state-aligned militaries, where dual-use commercial drones evade export scrutiny while bolstering tactical edges.
Complementing the VF-200 were several Altair-370 units, smaller biplane configurations from Shenzhen-based Foxtech, marketed through multiple global resellers for industrial applications but readily adapted for military scouting. This tandem-wing hybrid, with forward and rear spans of 2.82 meters and 3.75 meters respectively, employs a 60-cubic-centimetre electronic fuel-injected generator for hybrid propulsion, pairing electric motors for quiet vertical phases with gasoline for cruising efficiency. At a 40-kilogram takeoff weight and 18-kilogram empty mass, it lifts 18 kilograms of sensors or relays, achieving 10 to 15 hours of flight on a 10-litre fuel load with a 4-kilogram battery and payload, cruising at 26 to 40 meters per second across temperatures from -20 to 50 degrees Celsius. The airframe’s aerodynamic shaping minimises drag, enhancing stability in Libya’s gusty sirocco winds, and its spacious internal bays accommodate swappable modules like infrared turrets or electronic warfare jammers.
These vertical take-off platforms form part of a burgeoning LNA drone ecosystem, layered for comprehensive intelligence dominance. Beyond the parade stars, the force fields the Chilong-11 VTOL for close-in tactical feeds, Iran’s Mohajer-4 for medium-altitude strikes, Russia’s Orlan-10 for electronic warfare, and Chinese standouts like the AheadX QP537 quadcopter swarm enabler, Xi’an SATUAV V15 fixed-wing scout, Volitation VT370 hybrid, and the venerable Wing Loong I and II medium-altitude long-endurance types. The Wing Loong I, priced at around $1 million per unit, exemplifies affordability with a 20-hour endurance, 4,000-kilometre range, and 200-kilogram payload for laser-guided bombs, allowing persistent overwatch over Tripoli’s urban sprawl or Sirte’s oil infrastructure. Smaller quad- and hexacopters, hundreds strong, serve as loitering munitions for precision drops on vehicle convoys, bridging gaps in the LNA’s air fleet strained by UN embargoes.
This inventory buildup traces back to 2019 setbacks, when Turkish Bayraktar TB2 strikes halted LNA advances on Tripoli, exposing vulnerabilities in contested airspace. Without international recognition or a unified government—their rivals hold sway in the capital—the LNA parallels Yemen’s Ansar Allah in leveraging drone swarms to offset conventional deficits, turning low-cost autonomy into a force multiplier for irregular warfare. Localised assembly lines in eastern Libya now fabricate airframes and bomb casings via 3D printing, reducing import dependencies and enabling rapid iterations against evolving countermeasures. These assets dovetail with ground fires, extending the reach of Russian Msta-B 152mm howitzers, towed M-46 guns, BM-30 Smerch multiple rocket systems, and FROG-7 launchers; drone feeds provide terminal guidance, boosting hit probabilities from 20 per cent to over 80 per cent in dynamic battlespaces.
China’s dominance in this proliferation wave propels the LNA’s gains. As the world’s leading unmanned aerial vehicle exporter, Beijing’s firms like the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation and China Aeronautical Import and Export Corporation delivered 282 combat drones to 17 nations over the past decade, dwarfing the United States’ 12 transfers, according to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute figures. In 2024, Chinese exports skewed 77 per cent toward Asia and Oceania, with 14 per cent to Africa, where systems like the Wing Loong series address insurgencies, jihadist incursions, and territorial sprawls. Ethiopia’s 2021 Tigray campaign illustrated its pivot-point impact: as rebels neared Addis Ababa, imported Chinese drones shredded armoured columns 200 kilometres out, averting collapse and prompting foreign evacuations. Across the continent, these platforms thrive on sub-$2 million price points, versatile sensors for day-night operations, and modular armaments, often bartered for minerals amid fiscal strains.
Several factors fuel this ascent. United States adherence to the 1987 Missile Technology Control Regime curtails sales of systems capable of delivering weapons of mass destruction, throttling exports to non-NATO allies and inflating costs up to 15-fold compared to Chinese equivalents. Beijing sidesteps such hurdles, unbound by ethical export filters, and sweetens deals with resource swaps—Libya’s oil reserves likely factor into LNA pacts. Reliability in austere climes, coupled with no-strings training packages, cements user loyalty; maintenance intervals stretch to 300 flight hours, far outpacing pricier Western rivals. For the LNA, this influx democratizes air power, enabling a fractured force to contest skies against better-equipped Tripoli loyalists and deter foreign meddlers.
