Terra Industries recently finalised a $ 22 million strategic funding extension led by Lux Capital, bringing its total capital raised in this round to $ 34 million. This investment cycle saw participation from 8VC, Nova Global, Silent Ventures, Belief Capital, Tofino Capital, and Resilience17 Capital. The round closed in less than two weeks, a timeline that demonstrates the current investor appetite for indigenous defense solutions within the African market. Founded in 2024 by Nathan Nwachuku and Maxwell Maduka, the firm is positioning itself as the first defense technology prime on the continent. By focusing on vertical integration, Terra Industries manages the entire lifecycle of its autonomous systems, from hardware design and manufacturing to the software layers that govern mission logic.
The emergence of a domestic defence prime comes at a notable period for regional industrialisation. Africa currently holds approximately 30 per cent of the world’s critical mineral reserves and attracts nearly 100 billion dollars in annual infrastructure investment. However, much of this economic activity takes place in remote or historically unstable regions where traditional security measures often fail to keep pace with the speed of industrial growth. In Sub-Saharan Africa and the Sahel, threats such as infrastructure sabotage, illegal resource extraction, and organised terrorism present substantial risks to supply chain continuity. Nathan Nwachuku, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, notes that while the continent is industrialising faster than any other region, insecurity remains a fundamental vulnerability.
To address these vulnerabilities, Terra Industries provides a suite of multi-domain autonomous systems. These include long-range and mid-range Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), autonomous sentry towers, and Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs). These assets provide continuous surveillance and kinetic response capabilities for critical assets such as power plants and mines. At the centre of this hardware ecosystem is ArtemisOS, a proprietary software platform. ArtemisOS acts as a unified Command and Control (C2) layer, facilitating real-time threat detection and autonomous mission planning across diverse environments. This integration allows for a coordinated response between land, air, and maritime assets, which is essential for securing vast and difficult terrains where human-centric security models struggle to scale.
The shift toward autonomous systems represents a technical trade-off compared to traditional security. While human-heavy, reactive approaches have been the standard, they are often restricted by logistics and the inherent risks of deploying personnel to remote conflict zones. In contrast, autonomous systems offer a predictive advantage by maintaining a persistent presence through sensor fusion and edge computing. Terra Industries currently protects infrastructure assets valued at approximately 11 billion dollars, including the Geometric Power Plant in Aba, hydropower facilities in northern Nigeria, and various mining operations in Nigeria and Ghana. These contracts indicate that infrastructure operators are increasingly looking for technological edges to mitigate risks that local state security forces may not have the capacity to address alone.
A central theme in the company’s expansion is the concept of Pax Africana, the principle that African nations should lead their own peace and security initiatives. Historically, many African governments have relied on imported defence technology from Europe or China. These foreign-sourced systems often come with high maintenance costs and potential geopolitical complications; they can also raise concerns regarding data control. By manufacturing systems domestically in a 15,000-square-foot facility in Abuja, Terra Industries ensures that the data intelligence gathered remains under regional sovereignty. Maxwell Maduka, the Chief Technology Officer, emphasises that building these systems locally keeps intellectual property on the continent and creates a skilled workforce of African engineers.
The technical team at Terra Industries reflects a multidisciplinary approach, drawing from the founders’ backgrounds in physics and naval engineering. Maxwell Maduka served as a lead UAV engineer in the Nigerian Navy, while Nathan Nwachuku built a large-scale education technology platform before the age of 18. Their engineering staff includes talent from the Nigerian armed forces and global technology firms, allowing them to build hardware specifically designed for the heat, dust, and communication constraints of the African landscape. This focus on local operational realities gives the firm a competitive advantage over international incumbents whose systems may not be hardened for these specific environmental factors.
The new capital will support expanded manufacturing capacity in Nigeria and accelerate the deployment of systems across allied African nations. The company also intends to grow its engineering and business development teams in London and San Francisco to better interface with the global defence community. This expansion comes as the company moves beyond site-specific infrastructure protection into broader roles, including border security and counterterrorism operations. As regional instability in the Sahel intensifies, the ability to monitor long borders using autonomous aerial and ground assets becomes a matter of national security for many states.
Brandon Reeves, a partner at Lux Capital, states that security is the prerequisite for all economic growth. By providing a vertically integrated platform, Terra Industries aims to serve as the technological foundation for that growth. The company’s trajectory suggests that the future of African defence will move away from troop-heavy deployments toward a model of sovereign intelligence. This transition relies on the ability to detect and deter threats autonomously, ensuring that industrial progress is not undermined by external or internal volatility. The success of Terra Industries to date shows that the African defence market is ready for indigenous innovation that prioritises data sovereignty and technical self-reliance.
