Two subsidiaries of the French military services company Défense Conseil International (DCI), Atechsys and LVCim, are training soldiers from Ivory Coast to operate drones. This training is part of a €15 million military assistance mission funded by the European Union for Ivory Coast.

The training effort in Ivory Coast showcases DCI’s growing influence on the continent. A key part of this project stems from DCI’s acquisition of Atechsys in early 2021. Atechsys focuses on smart drone solutions and comes equipped with valuable assets, including a design office and test and training centers. This move has bolstered DCI’s capacity to support unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations, enabling the company to craft customized drone solutions within a comprehensive service framework. For the Ivorian initiative, Atechsys’s role is vital, as it will deliver the training drones that give soldiers practical experience.

Working alongside Atechsys, LVCim will supply RAPAS-type drone simulators tailored to offer realistic training environments for the Ivorian troops. These simulators are designed to ensure the soldiers gain a deep understanding of drone technology and its applications before putting their skills to use in actual operations.

DCI’s broader service offerings further complement this training mission. The company provides drones as a service, which includes operating drone fleets for state or military purposes—such as intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR)—as well as data collection and UAV tracking. As a subcontractor to various French state bodies, like the Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA) and the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC), and in collaboration with French defense manufacturers, DCI brings a wealth of technical and operational expertise to its projects.

DCI is a French government agency that provides defense and security assistance to foreign governments. It has worked with over 20 African countries and has previously supplied drones to Niger and Benin.

In 2021, DCI acquired Atechsys, which specializes in drone solutions. DCI also offers drone services, including operating drone fleets for state or military purposes, data collection, and UAV tracking.

The Ivorian Armed Forces already have some experience with drone technology. In 2021, they purchased four DT-26 long-range surveillance drones from the French UAV manufacturer Delair. These drones have proven essential in keeping watch over the country’s northern border, an area that has faced increasing jihadist attacks in recent years. The decision to acquire the Delair drones came in response to rising security concerns, particularly after attacks across the border in Mali, which have been attributed to Islamist insurgents.

The training provided by DCI and its subsidiaries is intended to improve the readiness of the Ivorian Armed Forces in using drone technology for security purposes.
