Africa is set to become the single largest market for the Embraer A-29 Super Tucano over the next two decades, with the Brazilian manufacturer projecting roughly 150 orders from the continent over that period. That assessment, shared with media during a visit to Embraer’s production facilities in Brazil on 10 June 2026, places Africa ahead of every other region in the company’s 20-year demand forecast for the light attack and trainer turboprop.
Globally, the A-29 has accumulated an impressive order book. Twenty-two air forces have selected the type, with over 300 aircraft ordered to date. Embraer added 39 to that order book in less than 24 months, the latest customers being Uruguay, which ordered five, Panama with four, and the Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) of the United States acquiring one. An undisclosed client signed for four aircraft in January, a contract widely believed to represent Togo, though Embraer has not confirmed the identity publicly. Military Africa previously reported in April 2026 that Togo’s Armed Forces (FAT) finalised a €70 million contract for four A-29s under its Super Tucano acquisition programme, with deliveries scheduled for 2026.
A Dominant Market Position
The numbers behind the programme are difficult to ignore. Over the last seven years alone, the Super Tucano has captured a 72 percent share of the light attack market segment, with 71 aircraft sold since 2019. By comparison, rival platforms have sold in much smaller numbers: seven Paramount Mwaris, eight Textron AT-6 Wolverines, and five Turkish Aerospace Industries Hurkus-C aircraft over the same period. Embraer’s Chief Marketing Officer for Defence and Security, Marcio Monteiro, told media at the 10 June briefing that the company anticipates a global market of approximately 500 aircraft over the next 20 years, with Africa accounting for the largest share at 28 percent. South America follows at 23 percent, with the Middle East and Asia each at 18 percent, and Europe at 13 percent.
The aircraft has now accumulated 625,000 flight hours, of which 65,000 are combat hours, a figure that speaks to consistent operational use rather than static storage in air force hangars. “This platform remains relevant because of its multi-mission capabilities,” Monteiro said.
Africa’s Established Customer Base
Africa’s relationship with the Super Tucano is not new. The type has built a substantial footprint across the continent, with confirmed operators including Angola, Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, and Nigeria, alongside Togo as the newest confirmed buyer. Military Africa has tracked this regional adoption for years, from Nigeria’s $329 million contract for 12 aircraft signed in November 2018 to their eventual delivery in September 2021, and Mali’s four-aircraft delivery in 2018 following a 2015 contract.
Monteiro noted that many African customers deploy the Super Tucano primarily for armed reconnaissance and border patrol, missions that reflect the security demands facing most of the continent’s air forces. In Nigeria, the fleet is used against Boko Haram and bandits in the northwest; in Mali and Burkina Faso, the aircraft supports counterinsurgency operations against jihadist groups including Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM). Burkina Faso’s A-29s were among the first on the continent to conduct live counter-terrorist strikes.
The Ghana Air Force (GAF) has been circling the programme for years without committing. Embraer and SNC conducted a flying demonstration at Air Force Base Accra in February 2024, and GAF leadership publicly expressed interest at the time. Ghana has not yet signed a contract.
What the Aircraft Actually Does
The A-29 was designed from the outset as a light attack aircraft, not a trainer adapted for combat as an afterthought. That origin shows in details that matter operationally: built-in 12.7 mm machine gun mounts in each wing, self-sealing fuel tanks, and armour at critical locations. It is powered by a single Pratt & Whitney PT6A-68/3 turboprop engine rated at 1,600 shaft horsepower, giving it a seven-hour endurance and the ability to operate from semi-prepared airstrips closer to the frontline than more complex jet platforms.
Five hardpoints carry a maximum external load of 1,550 kilograms, covering gun pods, bombs, rocket pods, and air-to-air missiles on the two outboard stations. The fourth-generation avionics suite includes an electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) system with laser designator, night vision goggle compatibility, secure communications, and a data-link package that allows the aircraft to share time-critical targeting information with other platforms in a networked environment.
The A-29 handles a wide mission spectrum: close air support (CAS), air interdiction, armed intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), border surveillance, forward air controller (FAC) duties, air escort, and both basic and advanced flight training, including lead-in fighter and transition-to-advanced jet training. That breadth explains why the aircraft appeals to air forces that cannot afford to maintain separate fleets for each role.
Counter-UAS: A New and Urgent Frontier
The most consequential development in the Super Tucano programme over the past 12 months is the addition of a counter-unmanned aerial system (CUAS) capability to the A-29’s mission set. Embraer announced a partnership with US company Valkyrie Aero in 2025, integrating its Gunslinger AI target classification suite into the aircraft to detect and engage drone threats. Embraer intends to have a marketable counter-UAS offering ready shortly after demonstrations planned for later in 2026.
Bosco da Costa Junior, President and Chief Executive Officer of Embraer Defence and Security, framed the rationale bluntly in November 2025 when the addition was announced. “The continued challenges in modern warfare and the recent conflicts worldwide have shown the urgent need for solutions to fight drones,” he said. “The A-29 is the ideal tool to counter UAS effectively and at low cost, adding to the aircraft’s already extensive mission set.”
The timing is deliberate. As Military Africa has reported extensively, the drone threat in Africa has accelerated sharply. From rebel FPV kamikaze drones striking Russian Africa Corps convoys in Mali, to fibre-optic guided systems fielded by the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), to loitering munitions in Sudan’s civil war, African air forces now face unmanned threats that older platforms were not designed to counter. The A-29’s EO/IR sensors, data-link package, laser-guided rockets, and autocannon offer a lower-cost response to the small drone threat than air-to-air missiles or ground-based electronic warfare systems. Where the Aircraft Is Built
Aircraft for most customers are manufactured at Embraer’s facility in Brazil. For customers procuring through the United States Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme, SNC produces the type at its facility in Jacksonville, Florida. Nigeria, Lebanon, and Afghanistan are among the FMS customers whose aircraft were built in Jacksonville. SNC has also produced a small number of “white tail” aircraft in anticipation of future demand, allowing for faster delivery once contracts are signed.
Embraer is also evaluating a third production line in Portugal, a move that would place manufacturing inside the European Union and potentially open the programme to European customers and co-production arrangements. No timeline has been confirmed.
Current production stands at approximately 12 aircraft per year, adjusted for demand. With Embraer projecting roughly 500 aircraft to sell over the next 20 years, sustaining or expanding that production rate will be a central industrial challenge.
Why Africa Remains the Programme’s Core Market
The convergence of security pressures, budget constraints, and operational experience points toward continued African demand for the A-29. Air forces across the continent need an aircraft that can operate from austere bases in extreme heat, carry useful weapons loads without requiring dedicated logistics chains designed for fast jets, train pilots to a standard that later facilitates transition to more advanced aircraft, and now engage drone threats at a cost that does not consume an entire operational budget per sortie.
As Embraer intensified its marketing across Africa through 2025, participating in the 4th African Air Forces Forum in Lagos in May 2025 and engaging directly with chiefs of air staff across the continent, the company has been targeting the gap between interest and contract signature in countries like Ghana, where the Super Tucano has been under consideration since 2015.
At 625,000 flight hours with 65,000 in combat, the A-29 is not a platform in search of proof. It is a proven aircraft now adding capabilities in real time to stay relevant to the threat environment its customers face. For African air forces navigating insurgency, terrorism, and a rapidly evolving drone threat on constrained budgets, that combination continues to make a compelling case for the next order.
