The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) conducted the first documented drone-on-drone aerial interception in history this month, using a Turkish-built Bayraktar Akıncı to shoot down another Akıncı suspected of being operated by Ethiopia. The engagement, verified by Sudanese state media and subsequent wreckage analysis on May 12, 2026, utilized EREN High-Speed Multi-Purpose Loitering Munition developed by ROKETSAN and shot down the hostile target through air-to-air engagement over Sudanese airspace.
The interception occurred as the intruder entered Sudanese territory from the neighboring Horn of Africa. Sudanese government forces loyal to Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan deployed their Akıncı heavy strike drone to track the incoming aircraft. Upon establishing a lock, the SAF platform launched a Roketsan Eren, a high-speed “smart” munition specifically designed for air-to-air counter-drone missions.

Visual evidence released by the SAF showed electro-optical and infrared tracking imagery of the twin-engine unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) before a kinetic impact caused the target to disintegrate. Ground recovery teams later secured debris in North Kordofan, displaying fuselage fragments and engines that confirm the downed aircraft was a Bayraktar Akıncı. This marks a rare instance where identical platforms from the same manufacturer engaged in lethal combat on opposite sides of a regional dispute.
Roketsan Eren High-Speed Multipurpose Loitering Munition
The weapon used in the kill, the Roketsan Eren, represents a significant leap in unmanned combat capabilities. First unveiled at defense exhibitions in 2025, the Eren is a compact loitering munition weighing roughly 35 kg and measuring 2 meters in length. It features an electro-optical seeker and AI-guided tracking features that allow it to autonomously home in on low-speed aerial targets like helicopters and other UAVs.
The Eren completed its initial live-target tests over the Black Sea as recently as February 2026. Its operational success in Sudan serves as a “combat-proven” validation for Roketsan’s engineering, particularly its ability to maintain a high hit rate at distances exceeding 100 kilometers. The system uses a combination of inertial navigation and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) to loiter before accelerating to high speeds for a surprise terminal attack.

The Bayraktar Akıncı itself is a high-altitude, long-endurance (HALE) platform that has redefined the Sudanese military’s reach since its arrival in late 2024. With a 20-meter wingspan and twin engines, the Akıncı can operate at altitudes up to 40,000 feet, carrying a payload of 1,350 kg. Before this air-to-air engagement, the SAF primarily used the platform for precision strikes against Rapid Support Forces (RSF) logistics and supply routes in Darfur and Kordofan.
The emergence of “drone-on-drone” attrition highlights a shift in global defense doctrine. While UAVs were once seen as vulnerable to traditional manned fighters or ground-based air defenses, the Sudan engagement shows they are becoming primary assets for airspace denial. This evolution forces military planners to view large combat drones not just as bombers or scouts, but as aerial hunters capable of patrolling contested borders.
This dogfight also exposes the complexities of the Turkish defense export boom. Türkiye has supplied the Akıncı to both the Sudanese government and the Ethiopian Air Force, leading to a scenario where Ankara’s hardware is used on both sides of a border tension involving water resources and land rights. As a reminder, in early May, a spokesperson for the Sudanese Armed Forces accused the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia of aggression against his country and of supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militants. The success of the Eren munition will likely increase global demand for integrated drone-hunter packages among nations already operating Turkish airframes.
The loss of the Ethiopian-linked Akıncı follows a string of recent UAV setbacks for the SAF, which has lost at least three Akıncı units to RSF ground fire earlier this year (verified on May 5, 2026). The RSF has reportedly upgraded its defensive posture using foreign-supplied systems, including suspected Chinese FK-2000 and FB-10A short-range air defence systems to Sudan’s RSF. These losses have forced the Sudanese military to pivot toward more aggressive, high-altitude counter-drone tactics to protect their dwindling fleet. The Sudanese Air Force recently used one to destroy a stray Chinese FK-2000 air defense system belonging to the RSF.
The engagement over North Kordofan suggests that future proxy conflicts will be characterized by technologically dense, unmanned environments. As the SAF continues to integrate AI-guided munitions like the Eren, the focus of the conflict may shift from ground-attack missions to a struggle for total unmanned aerial supremacy. The Sudanese military is expected to expand its inventory of Roketsan munitions as it attempts to close the capability gap created by the arrival of advanced anti-aircraft systems in the region.
