The Russian Navy’s Udaloy class frigate, Marshal Shaposhnikov, docked at the port of Massawa in Eritrea, in a significant move to bolster defence cooperation, and marking a pivotal moment in the military relations between Russia and the African nation.
The arrival of the frigate coincided with the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, symbolizing a deepening partnership. The delegation, led by Vice Admiral Vladimir Kasatonov, Deputy Commander of the Russian Navy, was warmly received by Eritrean officials, including General Filipos Woldeyohannes and Ambassador Zemede Tekle, highlighting the importance of the visit.
The Marshal Shaposhnikov’s journey through the strategic Bab-el-Mandeb Strait before docking in Massawa highlights the strategic significance of the Red Sea region to Russia’s global naval strategy. The presence of the frigate, alongside the guided missile cruiser Varyag, demonstrates Russia’s commitment to maintaining a robust maritime presence in key global trade routes.
During the five-day visit, discussions focused on enhancing regional peace and stability, with Russia’s role as a major arms supplier to Africa playing a crucial part in the bilateral relations. The potential establishment of a Russian logistic center in Eritrea, initiated in 2019, was also a topic of interest, aiming to increase Russia’s military and logistical capabilities in the Horn of Africa.
The port call provided an opportunity for President Isaias Afwerki to tour the frigate, further solidifying the defense ties between the nations. The Marshal Shaposhnikov, a modernized vessel that has seen action in the Indian Ocean, represents Russia’s ongoing efforts to support its allies and maintain a strategic foothold in geopolitically significant regions.
