Benin, a West African country known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant economy, has taken a significant step towards enhancing its security capabilities. The Benin Air Force recently acquired two H125M helicopters from Airbus, which are now being utilized to combat terrorism in the northern region of the country. This acquisition marks a milestone in Benin’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities and safeguard its citizens from the threat of terrorism.

The delivery of the two H125M helicopters took place on 3rd February, with the aircraft being transported aboard an Ilyushin Il-76 operated by Zet Avia. These versatile helicopters, renowned for their reliability and performance, provide Benin’s Air Force with enhanced mobility and operational flexibility in its counterterrorism operations. Equipped with advanced technology and weapons systems, the H125M helicopters are poised to play a vital role in curbing terrorist activities and ensuring the safety and security of the country’s northern region.

The H125M, a military variant of the popular H125 helicopter, is designed to meet the specific requirements of armed forces engaged in various missions, including counterterrorism operations, search and rescue, and border patrol. With its exceptional maneuverability, long-range capabilities, and high-performance engine, the H125M is well-suited for operations in diverse terrains and challenging environments. These helicopters will enable Benin’s Air Force to rapidly respond to security threats, conduct reconnaissance missions, and provide crucial support to ground forces combating terrorism.

The H125s were each fitted with a TC-300 long-range HD electro-optical/infrared camera system and TM-100 full-featured mission mapping and video management unit from Trakka Systems. The US-based company revealed the systems on the H125s would be used for security, surveillance, and search and rescue missions protecting borders, troops, and critical infrastructure in Benin.

“Trakka Systems is pleased to be a part of the Benin Air Force efforts to modernize their fleet of helicopters with its strategic partner Trade Circle Investment Ltd. Trakka Systems strives to deliver exceptional products coupled with astounding customer service,” said Glen Rowling, Vice President of Trakka Systems.

The acquisition of the H125M helicopters reflects Benin’s commitment to modernizing its armed forces and strengthening its capacity to address emerging security challenges effectively. By incorporating these advanced aircraft into its fleet, Benin joins a growing number of African nations that recognize the critical role of air power in maintaining security and stability within their borders. The H125M helicopters will significantly enhance the country’s operational capabilities, allowing for swift and effective responses to security incidents, thereby reducing the potential impact of terrorist activities on civilian populations.

In addition to the procurement of helicopters from Airbus, the Benin Air Force has been engaged in negotiations with Russian Helicopters for the purchase of transport aircraft. However, due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, these plans have likely been shelved for the time being. Despite this setback, the acquisition of the H125M helicopters from Airbus represents a significant advancement in Benin’s counterterrorism efforts.

The utilization of these helicopters in combatting terrorism will undoubtedly strengthen Benin’s ability to effectively respond to threats in the northern region. The enhanced mobility and operational flexibility provided by the H125M helicopters will enable the Air Force to conduct targeted operations, gather vital intelligence, and swiftly deploy forces when and where they are needed most. By leveraging the latest technologies and capabilities, Benin is positioning itself as a proactive force against terrorism, ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.

Earlier in March, the Chinese government donated four NORINCO Type PMR-50 drone to the Benin Republic to improve its security and crime detection amid the emergence of terror activities around the country. While France handed nearly a dozen Forward Armored Vehicles (VAB) over to the Beninese Armed Forces. It is the first batch of 8 armoured forward vehicles out of an expected 15 which was handed over this Friday, January 20, 2023, to the Beninese armed forces. The armoured vehicles are equipped with support weapons and night vision equipment to provide secure transport for troops in theatres and protect them against weapons and their homemade mines used by terrorists.

In 2018, the Benin Armed Forces (FAB) received a number of weapons and ammunition from Russia. The arms and trade agreement between both countries was signed in October 2010. According to a news report by Interfax-AVN news agency on 15 August, the weapons include man-portable air defence launchers, man-portable anti-tank rocket launchers, handheld anti-tank grenade launchers, and infantry flamethrowers

As the global fight against terrorism continues, nations across the world are recognizing the importance of modernizing their defense capabilities to effectively combat this persistent threat. Benin’s acquisition of the H125M helicopters demonstrates its commitment to countering terrorism and safeguarding its citizens. It serves as a testament to the country’s dedication to maintaining regional security and stability while contributing to the broader global efforts in the fight against terrorism.

In the coming years, it is expected that Benin will continue to invest in modernizing its armed forces, exploring opportunities to strengthen its defense capabilities further. The acquisition of the H125M helicopters represents just one step in this ongoing process. With a clear focus on bolstering its counterterrorism efforts, Benin is poised to emerge as a key player in the region, actively working towards a safer, more secure future.
